That's a tough spot to be in. It's easy to judge from the outside, but a lot of people are just one surprise bill away from real trouble. You see that tax refund and it feels like free money, even though it's not. Hope he figures something out for the car.

Come on, that's just poor planning. A tax refund isn't "free money," it's your own cash coming back. You gotta have some basic priorities. Brakes are a safety thing, not an optional upgrade. Blowing the whole chunk on a new phone when you drive a car is a choice, and it's a bad one.
