Hot take: The "ignore your credit score" advice I got in 2019 was dead wrong

My buddy Dave told me to stop checking my credit score because it would "lower it every time you peek." I believed him for 6 months and skipped two card payments because I thought the stress wasn't worth it. When I finally looked in March 2020, my score had dropped 84 points and I got denied for a $1,800 car repair loan. He meant well but that advice messed up my whole budgeting for the next year. Has anyone else gotten financial tips from friends that backfired this bad, or am I the only one who fell for it?

Gotta say though, maybe Dave was onto something in a weird way. Checking your score obsessively can mess with your head and make you panic-buy or stress-spend, so ignoring it for a bit might actually save you from worse choices. Sounds like the real problem was skipping payments, not the advice itself.
