Wasted $180 on a 'guaranteed' front row spot at the Maple Grove meet, showed up and they'd sold it twice

Paid a guy online for a reserved parking spot plus a free coffee voucher, but when I got there at 6:30am two other guys had the same paper pass and the barista laughed at me, so has anyone else been burned by these fake reserved spots at bigger meets?

Hit 500 briskets on my offset last weekend

Smoked my 500th brisket last Sunday on the old Oklahoma Joe in Austin. Numbers tracked on a dry erase board in the shed. That 500th one came out damn near perfect, better than the first 50 combined. Anyone else keep count of their cooks or am I the only weirdo with a tally system?

Just realized my $25 silicone basket liner was the reason my fries were soggy

I used the same silicone liner every night for 6 weeks and switched back to plain foil last night, crispy golden edges on the first batch, has anyone else thrown out their liners after a similar stubborn streak?

The day my forge fireback cracked in half during a demo

I was doing a live demonstration at the Lancaster County fair last fall, showing how to make leaf hooks, when my 1-inch thick steel fireback split right down the middle after I quenched it too fast. I had to grab a spare piece of angle iron and bolt it over the crack just to finish the last two hours of the show, and the crowd actually thought it was part of the process. Has anyone else had a piece fail mid-demo, and did you stop to fix it or just push through and explain it away?

Our bench test numbers flipped after swapping out that old cable set

We were chasing intermittent faults on a 737 pitot static rig for weeks, then I replaced the 30 foot test cable bundle with fresh shielded pairs and every reading straightened out in one afternoon. The old cable had cracked insulation near the connector and was picking up bleed from the fluorescent shop lights. Has anyone else found that cable condition matters more than the box itself on these older setups?

Pool or open water first, my 4 month swim panic finally sorted

I spent 3 months only doing laps in a 25m pool and then hit Lake Michigan for the first time, couldn't sight or breathe in the chop, so should newbies force open water swims every single session or is there a smarter mix that doesn't take 4 months to figure out?

Found a stuck float valve on a 12 year old fridge, fixed it with a zip tie

After 3 visits to a rental unit in Tucson, the ice maker kept overfilling and leaking. I finally pulled the whole valve apart and saw the float arm was binding on a stripped screw hole, so I used a zip tie to hold it in place and it has worked for a month now. Has anyone else used a temporary fix like that on a sealed system and just left it?

The missed quote that taught me to read the fine print myself

Back in 2019 I had a deck job in Portland where the contractor's bid came in $3,200 lower than the next guy. Turned out he'd left out the permit fees and the disposal costs, which added up to about $2,800 after we started. Now I ask every bidder for a line item breakdown before I even schedule a walkthrough. Has anyone else gotten burned by a lowball quote that wasn't actually low?

Last month a small business owner told me my statement layout looked like a receipt vomit. I had been cramming every transaction into a single table, no summary. She said she just wanted to know ending balance and any fees at the top. I redesigned it in two days, put a bold summary line, moved details below. Client retention went up for three accounts, and I got two referrals. Has anyone else simplified reports after a customer complaint?

PSA: Stop using canned air on mirrorless sensor shutters

Tried cleaning my Sony A7III sensor last week with canned air. Big mistake. The burst blew the shutter curtain right out of alignment. $280 repair bill later I learned those thin metal blades can't handle pressurized air. Use a rocket blower instead. Much gentler. Has anyone else wrecked a shutter this way?
