Pool or open water first, my 4 month swim panic finally sorted
I spent 3 months only doing laps in a 25m pool and then hit Lake Michigan for the first time, couldn't sight or breathe in the chop, so should newbies force open water swims every single session or is there a smarter mix that doesn't take 4 months to figure out?
...and there it is, the classic pool swimmer's dilemma. You spent three months getting real comfortable with that nice, flat, chlorinated carpet and then Mother Nature decided to remind you that she doesn't care about your lap count. My advice is a 70/30 split, pool for the stroke work, but you gotta get in that open water at least once a week, even if it's just to bob around and practice breathing in the waves. That first time out in the chop will humble you faster than a swim coach yelling at you for breathing on the wrong side.
