Went back to my old college anime club and barely recognized the place

I stopped by the student union at my old university in Flagstaff last month. The anime club was meeting in the same room but the whole vibe was different. Everyone was watching on their phones instead of the big screen, and nobody was talking during the show. Back when I was in school, we'd crowd around one CRT TV and argue about subs vs dubs. Has anyone else walked into an old hangout and felt like a total stranger?

Dropped $80 on a premium anime streaming service and still can't find the uncut version of that show I wanted

I paid $80 for a year of Crunchyroll's top tier thinking I'd get everything, but the uncensored version of Made in Abyss season 2 is still missing from the library. Turns out the premium plan doesn't guarantee access to all the bonus content I was after. Has anyone else gotten burned by paying extra for a streaming tier that didn't deliver what they expected?

Streaming service just deleted half my watchlist overnight

Logged into Crunchyroll on Tuesday and my entire queue just got cut in half. I had like 40 shows saved up to watch, seasons I was halfway through, stuff I was following weekly. All gone. No warning, no email about it, just poof. Checked their forums and turns out they did some kind of server cleanup or update that messed with user data. I spent two hours rebuilding what I could remember, but there's like 8 shows I can't even recall the names of now. Has this happened to anyone else with a streaming platform recently? What did you do about the stuff you lost track of?

Dub vs Sub debate. Does it even matter for certain anime anymore?

Okay so I've been rewatching Cowboy Bebop for like the 5th time this week and got into this huge argument with my buddy at work. He swears the English dub is better because Steve Blum is just Spike to him. But I grew up on subs so the Japanese voices feel more right to me. We went back and forth for an hour. But then I started thinking about newer shows like Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen. The dubs nowadays are way better than they used to be back in the 90s. Voice actors actually try to match the lip flaps now and the translations aren't as butchered. So does the old argument even hold up? Or is it just nostalgia at this point? I honestly don't know which side I land on anymore. What do you guys think? Have any of you switched sides after watching a particularly good dub?

I used to skip filler arcs until a buddy showed me the beach episode in Gintama

I always thought filler was a waste of time, but he made me watch that one and the character building actually paid off later in the main story. Anyone else find a filler arc that changed their mind about skipping them?

Took me four years to notice I was skipping the best filler arcs

I used to blow through anime skipping every filler episode because I thought they were just time wasters. Then I was watching an old Naruto episode last month with my friend Kyle and he pointed out how a filler arc actually explained a character's backstory I never understood. I had skipped that whole arc back in 2019 because I was following a list online. Turns out I missed like 30 decent episodes that added real depth to side characters I barely remembered. Kyle showed me how the filler gave context to a major fight scene that seemed random to me before. Now I feel kind of dumb for trusting those skip lists so blindly. Has anyone else found a hidden gem filler arc that changed how you saw the main story?

Overheard two guys arguing about Goku vs Saitama at a bus stop and it got me thinking

I was waiting for the 43 bus downtown last Wednesday and these two dudes were going at it for like 15 minutes about who would win in a fight. One guy kept saying 'but Saitama breaks his limiter' and the other was yelling about Goku's instant transmission. It made me realize that half the time we debate anime powers we're just using made up rules that don't even match the shows. Has anyone else ever overheard a random stranger debate that actually made you question your own favorite character's strength?

Watched 12 episodes of One Piece last week and finally got why people love it

I put off watching this show for like 3 years cause I thought the hype was overblown. Last Tuesday I sat down and binged through the Arlong Park arc and actually teared up at the end lol. Does it take everyone that long to get hooked or was I just stubborn?

My worst anime watching day was last Friday when my streaming site went down mid-cliffhanger

I was 22 minutes into episode 12 of a 26-episode series and the entire server crashed for 6 hours, so I just sat there refreshing on my phone like a maniac. Anybody else have a platform totally fail at the worst possible moment for you?

Why I finally swapped subs for dubs on my 3rd rewatch of Fullmetal Alchemist

I used to be a diehard sub-only person. I thought dubs always ruined the original voice acting. But last month I was grading papers and couldn't stare at the screen the whole time, so I tried the English dub on a whim. Turns out the voice actors nailed it, especially Mustang's English VA. Has anyone else had a show where the dub completely changed their mind?

A fan told me my pacing was too slow back in 2017

They said they skipped every scene of my favorite arc during a rewatch and that made me realize I was padding episodes with filler flashbacks, so I cut three minutes per episode on the next project, has anyone else had to trim their own work after a blunt comment?

So the English dub of that new mecha show dropped the ball hard on episode 7 last week with that awful voice direction, but the sub purists say it's always been better do you stick with a bad dub for consistency or switch mid-series and risk losing the flow?

Had been watching it with my buddy every Friday night and after that cringey scene with the main villain's monologue where the actor clearly phoned it in we argued for like 20 minutes about whether to restart from episode 1 in Japanese or just power through has anyone else dealt with this kind of split loyalty between dub and sub?

Finally finished that one anime I've been slogging through for 6 months

I started watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes back in March and hit a huge slump around episode 60... it just felt like nothing was happening. But I pushed through the last 30 episodes this weekend and the payoff was actually worth it. Anybody else have a series that took forever to click for them?

I started rewatching an old show from 2018 last week and by the final episode the character faces looked completely different, smoother and less shaky, because they obviously ran out of budget early and then fixed it by the end, has anyone else noticed that jarring shift in a series you were binging?

My friend said I should watch One Piece from episode 1, I called him crazy

Honestly, my buddy Jake kept telling me for months that skipping to the time skip in One Piece was a huge mistake. I was like no way I'm watching 500 episodes before things get good. But I finally caved and started from episode 1 back in January. Now I'm on episode 180 and I totally get it now. The slow buildup makes every big moment hit way harder. He was right about all the little jokes and callbacks too. Has anyone else had a friend push them through a long anime and actually been glad they listened?

Shoutout to the that one YouTuber who showed me how to spot a bad fan sub instantly

I kept running into fansubs where the dialogue felt off, like characters were talking in circles. Then this guy pointed out that if the TL notes are longer than the actual episode script, the translator is probably showing off instead of translating. I started checking for that and suddenly half the subs I downloaded made way more sense. Also look for weird formatting like random italics on every other line or subtitles that change font size mid-sentence. That's a red flag that someone used machine translation and did a quick pass. Saved me three hours of frustration last weekend alone. Anyone else got a go to sign that a fansub is gonna be trash before you hit play?

I used to think dub was always worse than sub until Re:Zero season 2

For years I was that guy who said subs are the only way to watch anime. But last month I was cooking and didn't want to read subtitles so I put on the Re:Zero dub for season 2. The voice actor for Subaru absolutely nailed the breakdown scenes. Like the part where he's crying in the alley after dying over and over? I felt that more than I did reading it. Now I'm not saying dubs are always better. But I was dead wrong about them being trash. Has anyone else completely switched sides on a certain anime's dub after hating it?

Watched the first episode of Attack on Titan from 2013 then the latest season last night...

The animation quality difference was insane. Back in 2013 the action scenes were good but kinda stiff compared to the fluid fights now. I marathoned season 1 on Crunchyroll back then and thought it was peak. Rewatching that old episode after seeing the new stuff made me realize how much better technology got in 11 years. Anyone else notice how the color palette changed too or was that just my TV?

Spent $150 on a Crunchyroll premium subscription and the player still buffers like crazy during the new season drops

I paid for the highest tier to avoid ads and get 1080p, but last Thursday during the Jujutsu Kaisen episode it froze every 3 minutes and I ended up watching on a pirated site anyway, has anyone else had better luck with HiDive or should I just save my cash?

Appreciation post: My buddy from high school called me out on my anime hot takes last weekend

I was ranting about how every isekai is just a copy of Sword Art Online and he said 'have you actually watched Log Horizon though or are you just repeating what you saw on Twitter?' Hit different cause he was right, I hadn't. Got me thinking about how much I judge shows based on what other people say without giving them a fair shot. Anyone else ever get called out like that and end up finding a new favorite?

Just had the worst week for anime watching ever and it was my own fault

I finally decided to binge that 90 episode mecha series I've been putting off for like 2 years. Got through 12 episodes in 3 days then realized I'd been watching the wrong show the whole time. There's two series with almost the same name and I picked the one nobody likes. Now I gotta start over and all my enthusiasm is gone. Anyone else ever waste time on the wrong anime just because of a confusing title?

My local anime club keeps calling 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' a straight-up mecha show

We had a whole argument last Thursday at the cafe meetup because they treat it like just another robot fight series, but that misses the point of the psychological stuff and the angels. I had to pull up that scene from episode 16 where Shinji just loses it to prove my point. Does anyone else get tired of people oversimplifying shows like that?
