I thought I could fix my own toilet and flooded the bathroom

I watched a video about replacing a fill valve and thought, 'how hard can it be?' I bought the part at Home Depot for $15 and shut off the water. When I put everything back, I forgot to check the supply line connection. Water sprayed everywhere for about three minutes before I got the main shutoff. The carpet in the hall is still damp. Has anyone else had a plumbing fix go this wrong right away?

My first time was with a 2005 Honda Civic that smelled like old french fries. I swear the check engine light came on just to join the celebration. What's the point of a rite of passage if it doesn't cost you at least 500 bucks?
