Cut my midi drums by hand for 3 weeks vs letting an AI split them in 20 minutes
I record scratch demos in my bedroom and every kick and snare hit had to be sliced by hand in Reaper, which ate 3 weeks on one song and made me hate the whole track, so I finally ran the stem through a free AI drum splitter in Berkeley and it nailed 480 hits in 20 minutes with maybe 6 mistakes. The speed is unreal, but the AI puts every hit dead on the grid so the song lost that sloppy human push and pull that was actually the point. Do you fix the missed hits yourself or just leave the grid as is, and has anyone found a way to keep the feel while still letting the machine do the slicing?
Man, that dead-on-the-grid thing is such a buzzkill when the whole vibe was the human swing. I'd nudge the hits back by hand to match your original feel, or try adding a tiny groove template in Reaper so it's not perfectly locked.
