TIL a 747 mechanic taught me why I was overgreasing landing gear bearings

Was torquing down a nose gear strut at a hangar in Memphis last month when an old timer walked over and told me I was packing grease into the dust seal instead of the bearing race, so how do you actually know when you've put enough in without making a mess?

Did that old timer actually show you the trick where you pump until you see it oozing out around the bearing seal, then back off a quarter turn on the zerk? I've heard you barely need any pressure once the bearing is full, and the mess comes from just cramming more in without checking the feel. What was the exact motion he had you do to feel when it was seated right?

Nah you don't back off the zerk, you just stop pumping when the resistance jumps.
