Walked out of my shift at the pizza place when the owner took $60 from my tips

I worked at a small pizza spot in Buffalo for about 7 months, mostly closing shifts on weekends. Around 11pm on a Saturday the owner came in, opened the tip jar and pulled out $60 saying it was for a broken dish I never touched. I had $47 in there from a packed night and he just pocketed part of it in front of two coworkers. I untied my apron, said I was done and walked to my car without saying anything else. He texted me 4 times that night saying I owed him an apology and my job back if I "acted right." The next morning I posted in a local group and found out two other people quit for the same thing in the past year. Was I wrong to just walk instead of making him give the money back first?
