Can we talk about how zero zones get skipped on panels with more than 32 points?

I read the manual for a DSC Neo last week and it said zones past 32 need a zone expander, but my whole crew swears you just double up the resistors on a single loop. Anyone actually tested whether the panel drops those zones when the battery dips below 11 volts?
