Found a raccoon family living inside a commercial panel last month

Pulled up to a strip mall in Tacoma for a quarterly inspection and heard scratching before I even opened the lid. Sure enough, mama raccoon had chewed through the conduit and nested right on top of the transformer. Chewed wires everywhere, droppings all over the circuit board. Customer said the alarm had been acting flaky for 3 weeks and they figured it was a bad zone. Cost them $1,400 in parts and labor plus a pest guy. Has anyone dealt with animals getting into panels and what do you do to deter it? I'm thinking about wire mesh over the knockouts now but not sure if that messes with heat buildup.
