That old diesel hand who told me to quit babying the throttle

I had this guy in his 70s come by the shop last month while I was working on a 6.7 Cummins. He watched me feather the throttle during a high idle relearn and just shook his head. He said "you're gonna glaze those rings running it like a sewing machine, give it some welly." I thought he was just old school and set in his ways. But after the truck kept having trouble with oil consumption on startup, I tried his way on the next one. Stabbed it to 1500 right out of the gate during the relearn cycle and let it hold there for 2 minutes. That motor settled in smooth and hasn't burned a drop of oil since. Anyone else had an old timer correct something they thought they knew about break in procedure?

Old timer showed me a square trick on a roofer's house last month

I was framing up a porch addition in Portland when this 70 year old retired carpenter walks by and says "your speed square can do more than you think." He showed me how to lay out a hip rafter angle without any math, just by flipping the square and it saved me 20 minutes of trig. Anyone else have some old school method that blew your mind?

Overheard a plumber say PEX is just as good as copper for hot water lines

I was at the hardware store on Coors Blvd last Wednesday and heard two guys arguing near the pipe aisle. One said PEX saves money and time, the other swore copper lasts twice as long with no failures. I just had to repipe my old house and went with PEX, but now I wonder if I made the right call for a 40-year home. What do you all think, is copper actually worth the extra cost or is PEX just as good for the long haul?

Just realized I wasted $60 on those instant payment transfer apps

I kept using those apps that promise instant transfers to my bank account for a small fee. Over the last 3 months I paid about $60 total in fees just to get money right away instead of waiting the normal 1-2 business days. It started with a $2 fee here and there, but it added up fast. I finally looked at my bank statement and saw how much I lost on something so silly. Now I just plan ahead a little and wait for the free transfers. Has anyone else noticed how those small fees creep up on you?

Just realized my swamp cooler was leaking from the supply line the whole time

I spent like 3 hours last August checking the pan and the float valve on my MasterCool cooler on the west side of ABQ. Turned out the little brass compression nut on the 1/2 inch copper supply line had worked itself loose after a windy night. Tightened it with a crescent wrench and no more drip on my ceiling drywall. Has anyone else had those nuts vibrate loose over time?

Caught myself typing the same email response for 6 months before realizing I had the wrong contact info the entire time

I was cc'ing the old vendor email on every invoice dispute and wondering why nobody fixed my billing errors until a random new hire pointed out the domain was misspelled and the whole department had been ghosting me without ever reading a single message, has anyone else wasted months on a simple copy-paste mistake that made you feel like a complete idiot?

Tried a 360-degree camera view for a blind lift behind a hospital wing

That older guy on this forum told me I was using firebrick wrong... he was right

I was laying firebrick in a boiler last month and this older guy named Pete commented on a picture I posted. He said I was buttering the whole brick instead of just the edges and it would crack by next winter. I blew him off at first (you know how it is). But after 3 weeks of heavy firing, two bricks in the back wall had hairline fractures. Next time I'm just doing the edges with a thin layer, leaving those air gaps. Has anyone else had their firebrick mortar fail because of too much material?

Hit 100k miles on my old truck and it changed what I think about car conspiracy theories

Buddy of mine bought a 2001 Tacoma back in 2007 and it had 110k on it. He treated it like a workhorse, hauling gravel and firewood every weekend, and the thing finally gave up at 320k miles. The head gasket blew, but he still jokes that the frame'll outlive his grandkids.

Just ran the math on my injector cleaning schedule

@aaronf40 you bring up a good point about the older trucks. I've got a 2012 6.7 and I was skeptical at first too. I started doing cleanings every 15k about 30k miles ago and my fuel economy went from 14.5 to about 16.2 on the highway. That's not a wild 12% jump but it's still something real. The dyno tests are probably more accurate but real world driving has a lot of variables like load and driving style. For me the extra cost of the cleaning is worth it just knowing the injectors are staying in better shape long term.
