The 2019 dub vs sub debate that got me banned from a Discord server
Three years ago I joined this anime server that had like 400 members and everyone was super chill. Last month they had a poll about favorite dubs and I mentioned I grew up on the 4Kids dub of One Piece, you know, the one where they turned Sanji's cigs into suckers. Within 30 minutes a mod DM'd me saying my nostalgia was 'harmful to the community' because it glorified censorship. I tried to explain it was just a silly childhood memory from my cousin's basement in Houston where we watched fansubs on 56k after school, but they weren't having it. The next day I was banned without any warning. Now I just lurk on a smaller subreddit where people actually talk about how dubs changed their first experience with anime instead of treating it like a political statement. Has anyone else been kicked out of a group just for liking an old dub, or was my experience just weird?
