The tiny shop in Akihabara that taught me to check disc rot before buying
Visited a 4-floor used anime DVD place near the station last week and a clerk showed me how light through the disc surface reveals rot that makes episodes skip, so now I always shine my phone flashlight on any $5 copy before I hand over cash, anyone else caught a bad disc this way?

Learned that trick the hard way with a box set of an old Gundam series, cost me forty bucks before I figured out why episodes froze. Now I check every disc with my phone light before buying, and I also give each one a quick visual scan for any dark spots or discoloration around the edges. Caught two bad discs in the last month this way, both were the kind that look fine until you actually play them and the player starts skipping like crazy. Saved myself a bunch of hassle just holding the disc up to the light for two seconds.
