Warning: Spent 11 hours subtitling one episode because I refused to learn a new tool
I used to insist fan subs should stay rough and manual, that grabbing a script and timing every line by ear in a plain text editor was the honest way. Then I got stuck on a 24 minute episode of a show with overlapping dialogue and three people talking over each other, and I spent 11 hours over two nights nudging timestamps by 0.2 seconds. My buddy Marco in Chicago sent me a 6 minute clip of his workflow using a free speech to text tool that auto times the lines, and I got the same episode done in 90 minutes. I still tweak the tricky spots by hand, but I was wrong about the whole thing being cheating. So what tool do you all actually use when a scene has four voices on top of each other?
