Hot take: I miss paper time sheets and I know that sounds crazy
Our shop in Tulsa switched to an app for clocking in about 8 months ago, and now I get flagged for being 4 minutes late when I was actually at my bench working. But the old paper sheets let people write down whatever, so I get why the boss wanted the app. Which one do you all think is worse, the app watching your every move or the guy who always logged 45 hours no matter what?
The Walmart thing does not quite line up though. Self checkout is the store making you do the cashier's job for free, and the paper sheet never made anybody do extra work. Here it is more like the app is a trade: you lose the grace period on being 4 minutes late, but you gain proof you were actually at your bench. That part cuts both ways, because now the guy padding his hours can't just write 45 and call it a week. He has to be there when the app says, or the boss sees the gap. So the app might be worse for you personally while still being harder on the guy who was cheating.
It's the same thing as those self checkout lanes at Walmart. The store saves money on cashiers, we all get watched like we're stealing, and the one guy scanning everything as bananas still gets away with it. So the app catches the honest people being 4 minutes late while the guy logging 45 hours every week is probably still doing it.
