Rant: I ran my moving crew for 6 years before realizing my 'open door policy' was a joke
Last Tuesday one of my guys quit after 4 years and in his exit talk he mentioned he never once came to me with a problem because he figured I was too busy yelling on the phone to care. I sat in my truck in the lot for 20 minutes after that thinking about all the times I bragged to my wife about how approachable I was. How do you actually make people believe the door is open when your face says otherwise?
The yelling was the sign, not the door. Your guys read your face and your phone voice long before they ever tested the policy. Try shutting your office door for real once a day and just sitting there with nothing else going on, so people know when to walk in. That's what makes the door feel open, not leaving it cracked while you're mid-scream.
