Got into it with a crew lead at a job site in Denver over topping vs thinning a big cottonwood
I said thinning was safer for the tree long term, he swore topping was faster and the customer would never know the difference, so which side are you on when the clock is ticking and the branch load is sketchy?

Topping a cottonwood is a hack move period. Those trees grow like weeds and topping just creates a bunch of weak watersprouts that'll break off in the next big storm. Thinning keeps the structure sound and the tree healthy for decades. Crew lead was just trying to save time and probably didn't want to climb higher to do it right. Stick with thinning, that's the pro call.

Topping a cottonwood is just lazy tree murder.
