Overheard a guy at the lumberyard say his climbing line was 7 years old

I asked him when he last replaced it and he said 'what for' and honestly I had to bite my tongue so hard because that rope is basically a death wish, has anyone else run into someone who treats their gear like it's indestructible?

Yikes, I read a report where an old climbing rope snapped under way less weight than you'd expect, scary stuff.

Nah, gotta push back on this one. I've climbed on ropes that were decades old and they held up fine as long as they were stored right and not abused. Most snaps happen because of a hidden cut or sharp rock edge, not just age alone. People leave ropes in hot car trunks or in direct sun for months and then blame the rope when it goes. Yeah, ropes get weaker over time but the drop off is way slower than those scare stories make it sound. A properly retired rope that's been kept clean and dry will still take way more force than any fall generates.
