PSA: check the root flare before you write the estimate, saved me a callback in Phoenix
Last week I quoted a removal on a 40 foot eucalyptus in Phoenix and almost missed that the root flare was buried under 8 inches of fill dirt from a old patio job, which would have made my stump grinding bid way off. I took 10 minutes to hand dig around the base with a trowel before sending the number, and the flare was so deep the tree had already started girdling roots, so I bumped the price and told the homeowner why. Does anyone else do a quick flare check on every estimate, or do you wait until the crew shows up and hope for the best?
Digging around every tree on every quote is a huge waste of time, man. Most flares are right where they should be and you just burned 10 minutes you could've spent selling the next job. If the dirt looks graded up or the trunk goes straight into the ground like a telephone pole, sure, poke at it, but making it a rule for every bid is gonna slow you way down.
