Rant: Stop topping trees and calling it pruning
I keep seeing this in my neighborhood down in Austin where people hack off the tops of their live oaks and think they're doing maintenance. It's not pruning, it's butchering the tree and leaving it vulnerable to decay and weak regrowth (which is dangerous). How do you guys handle clients who insist on topping when you know it's the wrong move?

The butchering" is exactly right. I see it all the time here in Austin too, especially on live oaks. People think they're making the tree safer by cutting the top off but really they're just making it grow back weak branches that snap off in the next storm. I had a neighbor who did that to his big oak and two years later a branch fell on his shed. The worst part is once you top a tree like that you can never fix it back to how it was. It's stuck looking ugly and being dangerous forever.
