Remembering a lesson from an old guy in a park in Boise

I was doing a removal on a big cottonwood in Julia Davis Park maybe eight years back, and this retired guy named Walt would just sit on a bench and watch me work for hours. He finally came over and said, 'You know, you're making that cut too flat. Give it a little angle so the hinge works right.' He showed me with his hands, and it was such a simple fix for a problem I didn't even know I had. Anyone else ever get a piece of advice from a total stranger that just clicked?

Got a story that's kinda the opposite. Was working on my car in the driveway a few years ago, struggling to get a bolt loose. Some guy walking his dog stops and says, "You need to push down while you turn it, not just pull." Tried it his way and it totally didn't work, just felt wrong. My neighbor, who's a mechanic, came over later and said that advice was for a different type of fastener. Sometimes the random tip is just wrong for your specific situation.

Yeah I used to brush off random advice too, but that kind of story makes me reconsider. Like @jamiew83, I've gotten bad tips before, but sometimes a stranger just sees something you're missing.
