A retired professor's tip on soil layers changed my whole dig approach last spring

I used to just scrape down with a trowel and call it good. Then this old guy, Dr. Havel from the university, watched me for like 5 minutes and said 'you're destroying your own evidence, kid.' He told me to check the color change in the dirt before I touched anything, like actually squat down and look at the edge. I thought it was overthinking it. Three weeks later at a site near Santa Fe, I saw this faint dark stripe that I would have wiped right through. That stripe ended up being a fire pit line from about 1100 AD. He also said to always take a photo before you move a single pebble. I still forget that half the time. Has anyone else had some old timer correct their method and it actually paid off, or are we all just stubborn?
