My mom told me my 'help' was actually making things harder

I used to send my parents a big check for Christmas every year, thinking it was a nice surprise. After my dad passed, I kept doing it for my mom. She finally sat me down last spring and said, 'Honey, it just makes me feel old and like I can't handle my own bills.' I mean, that hit me. I switched to just covering one specific thing, like her internet bill for the year. It feels way less like I'm taking over. Anyone else have to change how they help after a parent got honest with them?

My metal detector found a weird lump in a field near Santa Fe

I was scanning an empty field where an old trading post was supposed to be, and my Garrett Ace 300 beeped on something about eight inches down. I dug it up expecting a coin or a button, but it was just a solid, rusted lump of iron about the size of my fist. I cleaned it off and realized it was probably just a piece of a broken plow blade from a hundred years later than I was looking for. Has anyone else gotten super excited by a signal that turned out to be total farm junk?

It hit me that using pine for outdoor stuff isn't the disaster people make it out to be. My bench has held up fine for seasons.

Update: Lost my entire deposit over a cleaning clause I glossed over

Signed the lease without reading it properly... thought it was all standard stuff. The clause said professional cleaning was mandatory at move-out. I spent a weekend scrubbing the place, but they didn't accept it. Had to pay for their service out of my deposit... so much for saving money. Now I read every word before signing anything.
