TIL negotiating a start date can burn a job offer fast

I asked for two extra days to give notice at my old gig in Austin and the HR lady went quiet. She came back with 'we need someone sooner' and pulled the offer the same afternoon. Turns out the hiring manager had a hard deadline I never knew about, so my ask looked like I wasn't serious. Took me 6 weeks of interviews to get that offer and lost it in 20 minutes. Has anyone else had a simple scheduling request nuke a deal like that?

Need someone sooner" is HR for "we hate vacations." Learned that one the hard way too.
