Paid $90 for a fake Viking rune stone from a roadside shop in Ohio

Stopped at this little place near Columbus that claimed to sell authentic artifacts. The rune stone turned out to be concrete with painted marks, and the seller vanished when I tried to return it after 2 weeks. I even showed it to a professor at the local college who laughed and said the 'runes' were just random scratches. Has anyone else fallen for a tourist trap artifact and how do you spot the fakes before handing over cash?
