Switched from a trowel to a flat-blade shovel for digging test pits in clay soil

Spent 3 hours struggling with a trowel on a site near the Ohio River, then a buddy handed me a flat-blade shovel and I finished the same pit in 45 minutes. Has anyone else found a tool swap that completely changed their excavation pace?

Used to think a trowel was the only proper tool for clay, but that flat shovel is a game changer. The extra leverage and cutting edge make a huge difference when you're fighting that sticky Ohio River soil. Cleared a whole test pit in under an hour after making the switch.

Ha, my trowel's seen more of my tears than dirt at this point!
