Finally found the secret to fixing orange peel on older clear coats

I have been fighting with orange peel on a 2010 Ford Fusion for the last 3 days. The clear coat was really rough and no amount of buffing was fixing it. Then I tried wet sanding with 1500 grit by hand instead of using the DA and it came out glassy smooth. Has anyone else had better luck with hand sanding on those older factory finishes?

My cousin tried doing a whole panel by hand on his 08 Civic and it came out absolutely PERFECT. I think the key is you just have WAY more control with your fingers than any machine can give you on those old hard clears.
