Noticed a weird test setup at PDX last month, 90 degrees off on a VOR check
I watched a guy in Portland run a VOR accuracy test with the plane pointed north while the signal came from the west, is that even a valid check or was he just wasting an hour?

Used to write that off as someone who didn't bother reading the manual. Then a buddy showed me the math once, the bearing pointer is set to the radial, and if you rotate the OBS 90 degrees you can still see needle deflection, it just checks a different part of the system. The ground check tolerances are loose enough that it works, mostly just proves the receiver isn't lying to you. So yeah, that guy probably knew what he was doing, even if it looks sideways at a glance.
