PSA: Found a chafed wire bundle on a King Air preflight at 5am and it changed how I check the wheel well
Honestly I almost walked right past it. I was doing a preflight on a King Air 350 out of a hangar in Wichita last week, maybe 5am, running on a few hours of sleep before my shift ended, and I did my usual quick look up in the wheel well area. Something about how the loom sat against that bracket looked off, so I grabbed a flashlight and got my face up in there. One of the wires had been rubbing for who knows how long and the insulation was worn down to bare conductor in two spots. I wrote it up right away and we grounded the leg until maintenance could fix it. Tbh the whole thing stuck with me because I do that walk around probably 40 times a week and I usually just glance at that spot. Now I actually stop and trace my hand along the runs instead of trusting my eyes from a distance. Has anyone else caught something on a preflight that made you rethink your normal route?
