That portable ADS-B tester I scoffed at saved my butt on a ramp check in Dallas

I always thought those handheld units were overpriced toys for guys who can't trace a wire. Then last month an FAA inspector showed up while I was troubleshooting a G1000 glitch and I used it to prove my transponder was squawking correct codes in under 30 seconds. Has anyone else had a cheap tool surprise them during a high-stress situation?

Did your buddy find that out mid-ramp check, @miab16? I had a coworker swear by a cheapo $40 fuel flow sensor until a stuck bypass valve made him look like a miracle worker to the feds.
