Update: Saw a wiring job at the airfield in Ada that changed how I do connector pins
Stopped by the little grass strip in Ada last Saturday to help a buddy with his Cessna 172 and I saw something I had to share. The A&P there had a 30 year old panel harness laid out on a bench and every single pin was crimped with a $40 ratcheting tool instead of the cheap squeeze kind I grabbed at O'Reilly for years. He let me pull test a few and none of them budged, even the ones that had been flying since 1994. I tried the same pull test on my old harness at the shop and 3 out of 10 pins slid right out of the connector, which scared me a bit. He told me the trick is matching the crimper to the pin size and doing a quick tug test on every wire before it goes back in the plane. Took me about 2 hours to redo my last harness that way and the difference in how the pins sit is night and day. Anyone else here switch to a ratcheting crimper, and did you notice fewer intermittent squawks after?
