My brother gave me a $50 limit for his wedding gift and then got mad I didn't spend more

Last summer my younger brother got married in Columbus, Ohio. He specifically told me and my husband to keep the gift under $50 because they had too much stuff already. So I found a nice picture frame and a gift card to a local restaurant, totaled $48 plus tax. At the reception he pulled me aside and asked why I was so cheap. I reminded him about the $50 limit, and he said he meant that for other people, not immediate family. Has anyone else had family give them a specific budget for gifts but then expect you to ignore it?

Gotta say @rosebennett, your comment made me snort my coffee. I once got a "please no gifts" text from my cousin and then showed up empty handed, only to find out she meant "no gifts over $20" which she DEFINITELY did NOT say. So I ended up Venmo-ing her $15 from the bathroom like a total weirdo. At LEAST your brother gave you a number to follow, even if he changed the rules after the fact. Family and gift drama is just the WORST.

Oh man, at least I can save that one for a wedding gift disaster story that makes my own cheapness look halfway decent.
