The switch from paper maps to digital changed my whole approach in the Sierra Nevada

I used to rely on folded paper maps for 10 years, but after getting lost near Rae Lakes last summer, I finally caved and used CalTopo on my phone. Now I can't believe I ever planned a route without seeing elevation profiles and water sources overlaid in real time. Has anyone else made that switch and felt stupid for waiting?

You still carry a backup paper map though, right? For me, the big change was using Gaia GPS on my phone instead of the old Tom Harrison maps. The elevation profiles saved my ass on a trip near the Kaweahs last fall. I kept getting stuck on routes that looked flat on paper but were actually steep scrambles. Now I can see exactly how much climbing is ahead and plan my water stops better. I still bring a paper map in my pack, but it's mostly just for backup now. That digital layer changed how I pick campsites too.

Paper maps are good for the big picture but they definitely lie about how steep things actually are. That digital elevation data is a game changer for figuring out if a route is doable or just a death march. I'd rather know early and reroute than find out halfway through a waterless stretch.
