Covered deck in a thunderstorm, porch swing debate broke out

Last Saturday in Nashville we finally got the pergola up, then a surprise storm rolled in and made everyone take cover under it. Half the crew said the polycarbonate roof was a waste of $600, the other half swore it saved the whole build from water damage. So which is it for you all, is a solid cover worth it or should I have just stuck with shade cloth?
