Serious question, pre-drilling every hole in my deck frame saved me a weekend of cussing
Building a 12x16 deck last summer, my impact driver kept splitting the 2x8 joists at the ends. Tried clamping first, tried slower trigger pulls, still got cracks about 1 in 5 holes. Then a guy at the lumber yard in Mesquite mentioned pre-drilling with a bit one size under the screw. Took 40 extra minutes on the whole frame but not a single split after that. Fifteen years ago I helped my uncle frame his deck and we just ran screws straight in, no clue if the wood was softer or we got lucky. Anyone else find pre-drilling worth the time on bigger lumber, or am I just being slow about it?
