I thought oyster shell was a scam for eggshells, now I'm buying it by the bag

For like two years I kept tossing crushed eggshells back to my hens and figured that was enough calcium. Then my Barred Rock started laying eggs so thin I could dent them with my thumb. I finally grabbed a 5 pound bag of oyster shell from Tractor Supply for $8 and sprinkled it in a separate bowl. Within three weeks the shells were back to being rock hard. I felt dumb for ignoring the obvious sign, but now I keep that dispenser full all the time. Anyone else tried the eggshell route and had it fail too, or was it just me being cheap?

Were you grinding those eggshells fine enough, or just tossing them in whole like I did at first?
