Put a fake egg in the nest box and now my hens all lay in the same corner
So I had a decision to make with my 6 hens. Two of them kept laying under the coop ramp in the dirt, and I was losing about 3 eggs a week to cracks and mud. I could either block off that whole area with pavers and force them into the nest boxes, or try the fake egg trick my neighbor Dale mentioned at the feed store in Athens. I went with the fake eggs, three ceramic ones from Tractor Supply for like $8. For the first four days nothing changed, and I figured I wasted my money. Then on day five I found two eggs in the box with the fake ones, and by the end of the week all six were laying in there. Problem is they all picked the exact same corner of the same box, so now I get a pile of eggs stacked on top of each other, and I still crack one every few days. Wondering if I should add more fake eggs to spread them out or just let them figure it out.
Did all six start laying in that same corner right away, or did they slowly bunch up over a few days? Curious if one bossy hen claimed the spot and the rest just followed her lead.
