Spent $45 on a heated chicken waterer and my girls still prefer the frozen puddle under the deck

You know, I bet it's not even about the temperature of the water itself but the location of that puddle. Chickens have weird little brains and they probably think that puddle is "their" spot because it's hidden away under the deck (a nice, secure-feeling hideout). Your heated waterer is out in the open where they feel exposed to predators, so they'd rather deal with a frozen beaks than get eaten. Try moving the heated waterer right next to that puddle spot or even under the deck if you can run an extension cord, and see if they switch over (just watch out for chewing on the cord, little monsters).
