My $30 shelf bracket trick that backfired on a load-bearing wall
Last week I decided to hang some heavy shelving in my garage, and I figured I'd save cash by using cheap L-brackets from the hardware store instead of proper shelf standards. I put up four 18 inch brackets rated for 50 pounds each, then loaded them with paint cans and tools that probably totaled 150 pounds. Within two days, the top shelf sagged almost an inch and the drywall around the top screws started cracking. Turns out the drywall anchors I used were only good for 25 pounds, and I didn't hit a single stud because I was too lazy to grab my stud finder. My neighbor came over and asked why my shelves looked like a sad smile, which was a fair point. I ripped everything down and spent $80 on a proper track system anchored into the studs, no sag at all now. Has anyone else trusted a weight rating without checking the wall side of the equation first?
