My barber in Tulsa asked why I bite my nails, and I couldn't answer him
I was sitting in the chair at my usual spot on 11th Street last Tuesday and he noticed my nails while he was trimming around my ears. He just asked flat out why I do it, and I sat there for a second because I honestly had no clue. Then he said his brother kicked the habit by keeping a $3 fidget ring in his pocket and messing with that instead of his hands. I've been trying it for 5 days now and caught myself reaching for my mouth maybe 20 times, but the ring helps a little. Has anyone else swapped one of those dumb little habits for a physical thing you can hold? Does it stick or does it just turn into a new fidget problem?
Man, I gotta disagree with the idea that swapping it out is some kind of fix. The fidget ring is still the same deal as biting your nails, it's just something your hands do when your brain needs a job, so you're not really quitting anything, you're just moving it around. I chewed my pens for years and switched to a little putty ball, and guess what, now I can't sit still without squeezing that thing, so maybe the real question is why you need your hands busy at all.
