Unpopular opinion: a $6 door wedge saved my sanity when my roommate started hosting game nights 4 nights a week
So my roommate Dave decided back in September that our 700 sq ft apartment in Portland was the perfect spot for his board game crew, and suddenly I had 8 people yelling about Catan at my kitchen table every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I work early shifts at a bakery so I'm up at 4:30am, and by week two I was averaging maybe 5 hours of sleep a night because people would still be there at midnight. I tried talking to him twice and he just said "it's my place too man" which, fair, but also come on. Then my sister mailed me this dumb little rubber door wedge she got in a 4 pack for $6, and I started jamming it under my bedroom door every night. Turns out it cut the noise down way more than I expected, like maybe 40 percent quieter, and honestly it was enough for me to sleep. Not a fix for the real problem but it bought me a couple weeks to figure out a real plan with the landlord. Anyone else find a cheap thing that worked way better than it had any right to?
Back in college my place had this awful single pane window right next to the street and I hung a thick moving blanket over it with command hooks. Cost me like 12 bucks and it blocked way more traffic noise than the fancy curtains my roommate bought. The wedge thing makes total sense too, since most of that sound is sneaking through the gap under the door. Might grab one of those 4 packs and hit every door in my apartment.
