Warning: putting a $12 lock on my door fixed my roommate problem, but now I feel like the bad guy
My roommate in Denver kept walking into my room and borrowing stuff without asking, so after the third time my headphones went missing I bought a $12 keypad lock for my bedroom door and it worked instantly, zero incidents in two months. Here is the debate though: my friends say I should have just talked to him face to face like an adult, while others say a lock is cheaper than a fight and it saved the friendship. Am I wrong for skipping the talk and going straight to the lock, or did I do the smart thing?
Twelve bucks is not really the point here. The thing you got wrong is thinking you skipped the talk. You didn't. Buying that lock was the talk. He came home, saw a keypad on your door, and got the message loud and clear without one word being said. Is that the worst way to handle it? Not even close, sometimes a silent fix says more than a speech ever would. My only worry is that a lock fixes the stuff, but it doesn't fix the guy. If he's the type who walks into rooms and takes things, that habit doesn't magically stop at your door. It just moves to the kitchen, the living room, or whoever else he lives with next. So you solved your problem, sure, but don't kid yourself that the friendship got saved. It just got quieter.
