PSA: My sourdough starter exploded after 4 days of neglect

Left my starter on the counter while I went to Denver for work. Came back to glass shards and sticky goo everywhere. Fermentation got way too active in the warm weather. Now I'm wondering if sealing mason jars for starters is even smart. Anyone else have a jar blow up on them?

Four days? That's crazy, I've never heard of a jar actually exploding.

Oh jeez, that sounds like a nightmare. I had a jar crack on me once when I forgot to burp it, but full on glass shards is next level. The sealed mason jar idea works fine if you leave some headspace and remember to burp it at least once a day. But honestly, if you're gonna leave it for a few days, just stick it in the fridge next time. A loose lid or a cloth cover with a rubber band is way safer for counter storage.
