Hot take: credit unions aren't always the hero, one froze my rent check for 5 days in Austin
I was renting a place on East 6th and my check cleared my bank on the 2nd but the credit union held it until the 7th anyway, so my landlord charged me a $75 late fee. Everyone says ditch the big banks for a credit union, but has anyone else gotten burned by the smaller one?
Did you know credit unions actually stand for "Conveniently Ruining Every Transaction Until Nobody's Satisfied"? Okay that's not real but it might as well be after what happened to you. Holding a local check for five days when it cleared your bank on the 2nd is wild, that's not protecting anyone, that's just slow. The worst part is everyone acts like credit unions can do no wrong just because they're not Wells Fargo, but a hold is a hold no matter how friendly the teller smiles at you. I'd march down there and ask them to cover that $75 since their delay caused it, and if they say no, that tells you everything. Smaller doesn't mean better, it just means fewer people to blame when your rent money is stuck in limbo.
