Cashier at the corner store handed me my change in a weird way last month

I was buying coffee at 7-Eleven downtown on a Tuesday morning and the cashier counted out two fives and a single but placed them in my hand each one separately instead of all at once. He looked me in the eye and said 'people forget money is just paper until you feel it leave your hand.' Has anyone else had a random stranger say something that made you rethink how you treat cash versus cards?
