Just realized I check my bank balance 4 times a day now instead of once every two weeks
Six years ago I was the guy who balanced a checkbook on Sunday nights with a pen and a paper register, and I knew my number cold. Now I open my banking app before I even get out of bed, again at lunch, once around 4pm, and one more time right before I fall asleep. Nothing bad happened to me, no fraud scare, no overdraft spree. I think what changed is that the app made it free to look, so I look, and looking makes me anxious, so I look again to feel better, which never works. My wife catches me doing it at red lights on I-35 and she just laughs. The weird part is the number is almost always the same and I still feel like I need to confirm it. I miss the old version of me who could go 14 days without knowing exactly what was in checking. Has anyone else's phone turned into a little stress slot machine for their own money?
Man, this hit close to home. I do the exact same thing and my number barely moves either, yet somehow that doesn't stop me from tapping the app open like it's gonna tell me something new. The part about looking to feel better and it never working is the real kicker, that loop is brutal. My wife gives me the same look when I'm squinting at my phone in the driveway before I even go inside. Going two weeks without checking used to feel normal and now two hours feels like forever, which is kind of sad when you think about it.
