My credit card hit 4.5% cash back on groceries and I sat in my car doing the math for 10 minutes
Last Tuesday I was sitting in the Kroger parking lot in Columbus looking at my statement and noticed I had earned $312 in cash back over the past year without really trying. That number hit me because I used to think rewards cards were a trap that just made people spend more money. The thing is, I never changed my spending at all, I just switched which card I swiped for gas and groceries back in March. I ran the numbers on my phone right there and figured out I was basically getting a free week of groceries every quarter for doing nothing different. My old debit card gave me zero back for 6 years of swiping it at the same stores. Now I am wondering what else I am leaving on the table, like should I be using a different card for online bills versus gas? Has anyone actually mapped out which card to use where, or do you just pick one and roll with it?
