Question about why my bank held a $900 check for 6 days | banking and payments community

Deposited a $900 check from a client at my credit union in Austin last Monday and the funds didn't clear until Saturday, which almost made me late on rent. Is this normal for out of state checks now, or should I be asking them to release it sooner?
