I thought taking a $15 online course was a waste, but it actually landed me an interview

Honestly I have to push back on the idea that a $15 course shows real initiative. I mean it's basically the price of a movie ticket, so how much effort does that really prove? It feels like it just floods the market with people who have the same shallow knowledge. Maybe it got you an interview, but I doubt it actually helped you get the job or do the work. It's more about gaming the system than actually learning something solid.

Heard a story about a load shift from a guy in Cleveland

Man, that reminds me of my buddy who had a cable start to slip on a beam. He just talked his guy through lowering it slow instead of jerking the controls. That calm voice kept everyone from rushing and making it worse. It's crazy how not freaking out is half the job sometimes.

Changed my mind about using old pallet wood for a workbench

Oh man, I was totally on the pallet wood train for a while. I tried to make a set of shelves out of it last year. Half the boards split when I pulled the nails, and I spent an entire weekend just grinding out embedded gravel and mystery gunk. The "free" wood cost me a whole Saturday and a pack of sanding discs. Sometimes the cheap way out is just more work.

A quick heads up about air frying frozen fries

My buddy Dave was the same way, swore his air fryer was broken. He'd make these sad chicken nuggets, one side burnt and the other frozen in the middle. I finally told him to just shake the basket halfway, like tossing popcorn. He texted me a picture later of the most perfect golden nuggets, said it was a total game changer for his frozen pizza rolls too.

Heard a guy at the yard in Omaha say he never checks his load chart for lifts under 5 tons

Honestly, that "feel for it" is just pattern recognition you build up. Like a mechanic hears a weird engine knock and knows it's the lifters, not the rods. You see the same small problems cause big failures over and over. After a while, you just know where to look first without running every single test.
